Below, he scrubs each hat all over, making sure the entire hat gets a good
\nwashing.<\/p>\n

Can you see that each hat has one area where the brim straw is still long,\u00a0uncut? These hats have been through the first round of cutting, but the artisan\u00a0purposely leaves one area of the straw uncut. He uses the long area of the\u00a0straw to fold over the clothesline and put a clothespin on it when he hangs the\u00a0hats out to dry. (Below)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The\u00a0bleaching set up for the hats is similar to how Sim\u00f3n bleaches the\u00a0straw. The hats are put into the barrel, covered with layers of cloth, then a\u00a0bowl of burning coals and sulfur is put into the barrel underneath the hats.\u00a0The hats are left overnight in the sulfur smoke.<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, the bleaching does not lighten the color of the hats as much\u00a0as the apaleador<\/em> does.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
