You know in bullfighting that the matador is the one who kills the bull. In\u00a0fine hat weaving, the re-matador is the one who re-kills the hat, finishes it\u00a0again.<\/p>\n

The weaver finished the hat. Now the rematador<\/em> must finish it again.<\/p>\n

When a weaver finishes a hat, the hat is far from finished.<\/p>\n

Five more artisans make valuable contributions to the creation of each\u00a0hat.<\/p>\n

The first of the five is the rematador<\/em>, or rematadora<\/em> if a woman.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\"tour_08_02_unfhatsV1\"When weavers \u201cfinish\u201d hats, the hats have four to six inches of\u00a0loose straw fringe all around the brim (right) . This is how Montecristi hats\u00a0look when the rematadora<\/em> receives them.<\/p>\n

The rematadora<\/em> uses a specialized weave, called the back weave.<\/p>\n

The straw is literally turned back toward the crown (above) and woven into a\u00a0loose band around the outer edge of the brim.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of my hats have the edges woven by the rematadora<\/em> above. Some by the\u00a0rematadora<\/em> shown below. At the time of this writing (February 2007) there are\u00a0<\/span>six rematadoras<\/em>. These six weave the backweave for all Montecristi hats being\u00a0<\/span>produced now.<\/span><\/p>\n

To take hats to the rematadora<\/em> above, you have to be in good health. Her\u00a0house is up a hill. A steep hill. A seriously steep hill. A driveway is out of\u00a0<\/span>the question. We parked below and hiked up. Goats mocked us for even attempting\u00a0<\/span>the climb. Chickens bet amongst themselves whether or not we would\u00a0<\/span>die.<\/span><\/p>\n

We made it to the house. Someone was huffing and puffing so hard I feared he\u00a0might blow the house down. That was me.<\/p>\n

We realized we weren\u2019t really to the house yet. We still had to climb\u00a0some steps. Steep steps. Thank goodness I had brought all 50 pounds of the\u00a0photo gear.<\/p>\n

Legs firm as overcooked pasta, I persevered up the steps. Being a Panama\u00a0Hatter is not all sugar cakes and lollipops, you know.\u00a0The completed back weave is like a bound edge to keep the hat from\u00a0unraveling. It is very important to the overall quality of the hat.<\/p>\n

The more finely woven the hat is, the more finely woven the back weave must\u00a0be. Finer hats take longer to weave, take longer to back weave.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
